Some anime includes characters in an intimate situation as an integral part of the story, or simply to add some excitement. A sub-genre of anime is specifically adult in nature, and is totally oriented around sex.
Nude Scenes
Nude scenes in Japanese animation can often be extraordinarily casual. One of the best examples is Ranma 1/2, where girls often run around naked either because they're shameless (like Ranma herself) or for the purpose of humor. In other cases, a "flash" can provide a moment of excitement and embarrassment to a scene. Some characters are totally nude throughout an anime movie - often mingled with the prior hentai category.
Fan Service
Fan service in anime is a little something extra for the fans of a particular anime series or character, often with no bearing on the progression of the story. This can take the form of a musical number sung by the main characters or having the main character dress up in something totally wacky or interesting, for example. This analysis section focuses particularly on hentai-related fan service not otherwise categorized, which can take the form of various embarrassing situations, including upskirt panty shots and non-nude intimate scenes, including those between two girls.
Cute Girls
Probably the most common characteristic in anime is cute girls. Anime girls display their cute nature in two ways: action and physical appearance. Many anime girls act like cute playful and innocent kids who get into silly and hilarious situations - Card Captor Sakura is a prime example. Also, anime girls are almost always attractive in one way or another: they can look like angelic school kids, or gorgeous women. Even series like Dragonball Z, which is not focused on hentai at all, has lots of cute-looking girls (Bulma, Android 18, Videl, etc.), which shows the ubiquity of this particular hentai-related theme. Sailor Moon is a great example where a bunch of young girls both act cute and look gorgeous.
